Water-loss rates decreased 34.8% when specimens were in their conglobated form, while CO 2 release decreased by 37.1%. Water loss was also measured gravimetrically at humidities ranging from 6 to 75 %RH. Conglobation was associated with a decrease in water-loss rates up to 53 %RH, but no significant differences were observed at higher humidities.

How the Respirometer Works. When the tip of the respirometer is submerged, no additional air will enter. As O2 is used up, the pressure of gases inside the respirometer decreases. Notice that as the gas volume inside the vial decreases, the pressure of water outside the vial forces water into the pipette.
The carbon dioxide produced in cellular respiration will be removed by potassium hydroxide (KOH). As a result of the carbon dioxide being removed, the change in the volume of gas in the respirometer will be directly related to the amount of oxygen consumed.
A respirometer is a device used to measure the rate of respiration of a living organism by measuring its rate of exchange of oxygen and/or carbon dioxide. They allow investigation into how factors such as age, or chemicals affect the rate of respiration. Respirometers are designed to measure respiration either on the level of a whole animal or plant or on the cellular level.
All groups will isolate the effect of one variable (e.g., seed size) by controlling for other the effect of other variables (e.g., seed type). A true control group becomes important in experiments in which a treatment is being applied; the control is usually the baseline condition without the treatment.
